Summer break: It’s almost here

Summer break is right around the corner. When that happens, students may naturally feel like letting off some steam, but before you go out or decide to throw a party, you should keep in mind the consequences of going too far.

This is a sensitive time, and when you have your freedom from class and you are on your own, it can feel intoxicating. Know that your freedom has limits and some lines crossed may put the future your working towards in school out of your reach. It’s important to keep in mind Boulder’s various party ordinances when you are making your plans. These include:

Noise violations

Noise violations are not small beans, despite what most people tend to believe. When you violate a noise ordinance you may be subject to penalties, but even if you are not actually violating the ordinance, the police may still respond to a complaint.

Underage drinking

At any college party, there may be some underage drinking. Underage drinking is a problem not only for the person doing it but also for the hosts of the party. You could face penalties that will disrupt your plans if you are caught serving minors at your end-of-the-semester party.

Driving Under The Influence

If you are going to a house party, or even just going out on the town, you should designate a sober driver. This is the responsible move, but also the move that will protect you. Going home with a 4.0 average and a DUI arrest is definitely going to make the summer break an unpleasant one.

Keeping safe, staying smart

That second of absolute freedom while surrounded by your new friends at the end of a semester is one of the ultimate joys of the college experience. Unfortunately, that feeling can lead you somewhere that you never wanted to go. Keep your wits about you and do right by yourself and you’ll have a great break.
