When you’re going through a stressful, life-changing event like a divorce, it can be easy for your mental health to be affected. You have a lot on your plate while going through a divorce, and caring for your mental health may not be a priority.
There’s no simple solution for the grief and sadness you may be experiencing. But there are ways to prioritize your mental health during your divorce to help you feel better:
- Move around outside. Soaking up vitamin D and getting some exercise can positively impact your mental health. Even if it’s just a 15-minute walk after work, you may feel happier and more energized.
- Lean on loved ones. Having a solid support system is crucial when you’re going through a hard time. These should be people who will listen to you and support you. If you’re uncomfortable talking to friends and family members about your divorce, you might consider a therapist or support group.
- Address signs of depression. If you feel persistent sadness that may be impacting your appetite, sleep schedule or behavior, you might be experiencing depression. You should visit your doctor as soon as you can. They can help you explore therapy and medication options.
- Find a relaxing activity. There are many classes and clubs that can reduce your stress – and allow you to socialize with new people. You could try yoga, painting or gardening. If you can’t join a class or club, you could try these relaxing activities at home.
- Eat healthy food. When you’re feeling sad, it can be easy to binge eat ice cream, pizza and other comfort foods. But fruits and vegetables can keep you energized and boost your mood. And of course, healthy food also benefits your physical health.
Taking care of yourself is extremely important – especially when you’re going through a difficult separation. By following these tips, you can keep your mental health in check.
